Thin film can deform when tension is too high. When tension is too low, the web may wander, wrinkle, or wind loosely.

Some films also generate static electricity as they pass over rollers at high speed. Static can attract dust, make handling difficult, and interfere with roll separation. Suitable static-control measures should be considered according to the material and production environment.

Knife settings that create a clean film edge may not produce the same result on a thick or fluffy nonwoven. Roller pressure that stabilizes film may compress a soft web and change the finished-roll density.

Operators should establish recipes for each material instead of relying on one universal setting. A recipe can include:

  1. Unwinding tension

  2. Web-guiding response

  3. Knife position and overlap

  4. Line acceleration

  5. Rewinding torque

  6. Contact pressure

  7. Taper-tension curve

  8. Maximum stable speed

Settings should be confirmed through controlled trials and adjusted when material batches change.

Why Finished-Roll Quality Matters

The slit roll is often an input for another machine. Loose winding may create feeding instability, while an excessively hard roll can deform soft nonwoven. Film rolls with trapped air or telescoped layers may not run smoothly during printing, lamination, or bag making.

Width accuracy is only one acceptance criterion. Finished rolls should also be evaluated for edge alignment, roll hardness, core position, surface condition, and unwinding behavior.
