Slitting, shearing and milling all separate metal, but they solve different production problems. Slitting is normally used to divide continuous coils into narrow strips, shearing cuts sheets along a straight line, and milling removes material with a rotating cutter to create precise surfaces or features. Milling is a machining process rather than a coil-converting process. A rotating multi-edge tool removes material from a stationary or moving workpiece. CNC milling can produce complex and highly repeatable features, but its operating method, tooling and cost structure are very different from those of a slitter.

A buyer should choose milling when dimensional features and surface geometry are more important than continuous roll conversion. Using a milling machine simply to divide long coils would create unnecessary handling and low productivity.
